DASHING DISPLAY AGAIN
Wentworth Park's group 1 Association Cup provided
fireworks last year when champion Mantra Lad diced
with a quality field in NSW's richest staying race.
Mantra Lad has been long retired but two rivals from
the 2010 decider -- Dashing Corsair and Jarvis Bale
-- are up for the challenge again.
The opening cup heat (race five) on Saturday night
features the return of Richmond 717m record-holder
Lady Arko following an unfortunate clash with a stray
dog outside trainer John Hutching's home in Parkes
in late November. A chest wound required veterinary
attention and it was back to the drawing board.
Lady Arko, unbeaten in four starts at Wentworth Park
over 720m, turned heads when a fast 41.77s winner in
a heat of the Carnival Cup at Sandown on November 11
but then had no luck in the rich final behind an in-form
So Seductive. She clashes with Graeme Bate's old-
timers Jarvis Bale and Beware, Slick Lee, Hanify's Belle
and the much improved Cristalle.
The second cup heat (race seven) boasts Dashing
Corsair as the headline act. The rising four-year-old was
put out of play at the first turn in the group 1 Sale Cup
final on Boxing Day. He'd previously been in imperious
form, winning his cup heat in 37.61s on a heavy track.
Dashing Corsair's trump card is taking control early
on and dominating from the front. His supporters will
be keen on an early advantage but a shadow looms in
the form of Seek And Destroy. The former Victorian
is new to the 720m caper but has won at Wentworth
Park over 520m in a slick 30.04s and has been tuned
up with a brace of middle-distance assignments (at
Sale in the cup, Gosford and The Gardens). And then
there is Billy Bobaggings (box eight). He was in career-
best form before finishing sixth to Beware in the
Summer Cup at Wentworth Park on December 4.
CHOOSE THE BEST RUN
For the second year, the public can vote on which
greyhound had the best run of 2010 as part of the
NSW greyhound-of-the-year awards.
The "People's Choice" 2010 run-of-the-year voting
commenced on Thursday and the five nominees are:
Mantra Lad (Wentworth Park, January 16), Fancy
Mandy (Wentworth Park, March 20), Cosmic Rumble
(Wentworth Park, April 3), Lady Arko (Richmond,
June 5), Smooth Fancy (Wentworth Park, June 26)
Anyone can vote but to do so you must sign up
to become a free member of www.thedogs.com.au to
allow voting to be restricted to one vote per member
account. As part of the award, one lucky voter will
also win two tickets to the NSW greyhound-of-the-
year night, including accommodation, at the Sydney
Hilton on February 11. The winner will also be invited
to present the run-of-the-year trophy to connections
of the winning greyhound.
Voting will be open for four weeks, closing at
midnight on January 31.

Cut and dry: Ryan looks to the south with handy sprinter
THE WET-TRACK DUFFER
Melbourne switch . . . Gerald Ryan's handy sprinter Ego's Dare. Photo: Lee Besford
LEADING Sydney trainer Gerald Ryan
has opted to dodge Queensland's big
wet with Ego's Dare, sending the
sprinter south for firmer tracks.
Ryan confirmed on Thursday that
Ego's Dare would start in Saturday's
$100,000 Cleary Stakes at Caulfield
as he aborted plans to run the horse
in Saturday week's Magic Millions
Cup on the Gold Coast.
''I've just landed on the Gold
Coast and it looks like they've had 60
mils overnight and they look like
getting another inch today,'' Ryan
said. ''The horse was targeted at the
Magic Millions but it's a waste of
time dragging him all the way up
here only to run into a bog track.
''I know the race is 10 days away
but I can't see any let-up in the rain,
so I'm not going to mess up his plans.
That's why he's in Melbourne.''
Ryan pointed out that he had two
entries at last Saturday's Flemington
meeting, Ego's Dare, which was
scratched, and Ahdashim, which
won the Standish Handicap.
''Ahdashim did a great job in the
Standish and I might bring him back
for some of the better sprint races in
the autumn, but I was just concerned
how Ego's Dare settled in in his first
24 hours in Melbourne,'' he said.
''I had a look at him and thought
we'll wait a week, which won't harm
the horse. The beauty of coming to
Melbourne at the moment is that
the tracks are dry . . . he's a complete
duffer when the tracks get wet.''
Ryan believes the turning point of
Ego's Dare's career was when he had
the horse gelded as a three-year-old,
despite having an impeccable pedi-
gree and connections paying
$250,000 for the horse on the Gold
Coast. ''He was going nowhere fast
and I said to the connections that I
think gelding him is the only
answer,'' he said. ''After we did the
operation the horse has never looked
back. He was a winner of a nice race
on Sydney Cup day and he's slowly
but surely climbed the ladder and
Saturday's race seems an ideal one.
''It's always disappointing to miss
a race like the Magic Millions -- one
that he was set for as it's worth
$400,000. But at the end of the day
it's a waste of time and money as he
won't go a yard on soft tracks.''
Saturday's Cleary Stakes is a listed
race and features another former
Sydney galloper in the imported
Cannonball, which makes his debut
in Victoria for the Mornington
stable of Pat Carey. Formerly trained
by Gai Waterhouse, Cannonball has
struggled to realise the potential he
showed as a younger horse. ''I'm just
hoping that perhaps a little bit of
TLC could be the answer to switch-
ing him around,'' Carey said.
